🖥️ Volusia County Takes a Closer Look at AI Data Centers
Volusia County is getting ahead of the artificial intelligence boom before any data centers come knocking. County Council members unanimously directed staff to prepare a proposed six-month moratorium on new AI data centers while officials study potential impacts on water resources, utilities and environmentally sensitive areas.
No AI data center projects are currently proposed in the county, making this a proactive move rather than a response to pending development. Council members said the temporary pause, if ultimately adopted, would provide time to separate facts from speculation and determine whether new development standards are needed.
Staff will return with research, possible regulations and a draft moratorium for consideration at a future meeting.

A 21-year-old Georgia man was treated for non-life-threatening injuries after a shark bit him near the Dunlawton Avenue beach approach in Daytona Beach Shores on July 25.
Jacorey High was wading in waist-deep water when an approximately 4-foot shark reportedly made two passes before grabbing his left foot or ankle. According to the incident report, High struck the shark on the nose and pushed it away before making his way to shore with help from family members. He was later transported to Halifax Health Medical Center.
Beach Safety officials said the incident was Volusia County’s second reported shark bite of 2026. The first involved a surfer in New Smyrna Beach in March.

🌫️ Saharan Dust Heads Toward Florida
Another plume of Saharan dust is expected to reach Florida toward the end of the week and strengthen into the weekend and early next week. The Saharan Air Layer routinely carries dry, dusty air from northern Africa across the Atlantic, sometimes producing hazy skies and colorful sunsets while suppressing tropical development.
The dust can also affect air quality. Fine particles may irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs, with people who have asthma, COPD or heart disease, along with children and older adults, facing greater risks.
Health experts recommend monitoring air quality, limiting strenuous outdoor activity when particle levels are elevated and considering well-fitting N95 or KN95 masks and HEPA filtration during heavier dust events.
