🖥️ Volusia Moves Toward Data Center Ban
Volusia County leaders are moving toward a permanent ban on large-scale data centers in unincorporated areas, citing concerns about electricity and water consumption, noise, cooling systems, infrastructure demands and backup generators. County officials opted to pursue a ban instead of a temporary moratorium and will not accept new applications while an ordinance is developed. The proposal must first go before the Planning and Land Development Regulation Commission before reaching the County Council for two public hearings. Councilman Matt Reinhart said residents recognize the growing need for data centers but question whether rural Volusia is the right location. The restrictions would apply only to unincorporated areas, leaving individual cities and towns to establish their own policies.

🦫 Buc-ee’s Eyes Business-Friendly Growth
Buc-ee’s co-founder and CEO Arch Aplin III says the popular travel-center chain increasingly prefers expanding in states where its projects receive a business-friendly welcome. Speaking at the Aug. 17 opening of a new Arkansas location, Aplin said the company would rather build in communities that appreciate what it brings. The comments come as Buc-ee’s continues an ambitious expansion, including more Florida locations. The chain already operates massive travel centers in Daytona Beach and St. Augustine, each featuring roughly 53,000-square-foot stores and hundreds of fuel pumps. A third Florida location is scheduled for St. Lucie in 2027, while an Ocala center is expected in 2029, further expanding the beaver-branded company’s Sunshine State footprint.

🛋️ Volusia Gets Tough on Illegal Dumping
From abandoned couches to construction debris, Volusia County compliance officers are keeping busy investigating illegal dumping. In 2025, the county handled 1,774 complaints and helped remove more than 62 tons of illegally discarded material. So far in 2026, officers have already investigated 1,760 complaints and removed more than 100 tons. Investigators document dump sites and search discarded materials, photos, videos and witness accounts for clues that may identify those responsible. Officials warn that illegal dumping is more than an eyesore: it can harm wildlife, threaten water resources, block drainage systems and create roadside hazards. Residents who witness dumping are encouraged to document details safely without confronting anyone, while county disposal facilities offer legal options for unwanted household and bulky materials.
