🇺🇸 Volusia Firefighters Climb to Remember

Volusia County firefighters marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with a demanding tribute to the 343 firefighters who died responding to the World Trade Center.

Firefighters, county employees and supporters gathered at Volusia County Fire Rescue’s Training Drill Tower for a Memorial Stair Climb, repeatedly ascending the structure until they had climbed the equivalent of 110 stories — matching the height of each Twin Tower. The effort symbolically retraced the path of firefighters who climbed toward danger as thousands made their way to safety.

A quarter-century later, the tradition keeps their courage and sacrifice front and center while reminding the community that their legacy of service continues through today’s first responders.

💧 Ormond Weighs New Data Center Safeguards

Ormond Beach is tightening its approach to data centers, with the Planning Board recommending comprehensive plan changes designed to keep high-demand facilities from tapping city utilities from outside city limits.

The board voted 6-1 for proposed amendments but asked staff to revisit a policy that would cap water use for industrial properties outside the city. Staff had suggested 40,000 gallons per day, roughly matching the city’s highest existing users. Board members instead requested an average based on Ormond Beach’s 10 largest industrial water users to help define “extraordinary” consumption.

The discussion comes amid an 18-month city moratorium on data centers and a separate Volusia County effort targeting large-scale facilities. The City Commission is scheduled to consider the amendments Oct. 20.

🏫 Ormond Plans $2.5M Osceola Elementary Purchase

Ormond Beach is moving forward with a $2.5 million purchase of the former Osceola Elementary property, with plans to keep the 11.6-acre beachside site serving the community.

The Volusia County School Board unanimously authorized negotiations with the city after declaring the property surplus. City officials pursued the purchase amid concerns the land could otherwise become residential development, with preliminary concepts previously showing roughly 30 to 40 homes.

The site already includes ballfields, a tennis court, playground, restrooms and parking, and the city’s parks plan has identified a need for additional beachside recreational facilities. Officials expect the former school buildings will likely be demolished, but future plans aren’t set in stone. Community meetings are anticipated before the city decides what comes next.
