📊 Volusia Schools Earn National Financial Reporting Honor

Volusia County Schools has received the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Association of School Business Officials International, recognizing the district's commitment to transparency and accountability. The award was presented for the district's annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025.

District officials described the recognition as more than a financial achievement, calling it a reflection of public trust and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars. ASBO International noted that participating districts undergo rigorous review by financial professionals to ensure reporting accuracy and transparency.

The organization has recognized excellence in school financial reporting for more than 50 years, making the award one of the most respected honors in educational finance.

🩸 EMS Preparing to Deliver Blood Transfusions in the Field

Volusia County EMS is moving closer to providing blood transfusions directly to trauma patients before they reach the hospital. County Council recently approved agreements with Halifax Health and OneBlood, paving the way for a prehospital whole blood program.

Medical experts have increasingly supported administering blood sooner to patients suffering severe blood loss, with studies showing improved survival rates and outcomes. The initiative has gained backing from major emergency medicine and trauma organizations nationwide.

Under the partnership, Halifax Health will assist with blood handling and logistics while OneBlood will supply the blood products. EMS personnel have already begun specialized training and operational planning ahead of the program's launch.

Officials say the new capability will provide first responders with another critical resource when treating life-threatening injuries.

🏛️ Young Discoverers Explore Ormond Beach History

The Ormond Beach Historical Society recently wrapped up its third annual summer camp, giving children ages 8 to 11 an interactive look at local history. Through storytelling, crafts, games, and site visits, participants explored everything from Native American heritage to Ormond Beach's role as the "Birthplace of Speed."

Campers learned about influential figures such as Henry Flagler, John Anderson, and Lupe Burt, founder of the Historical Society. Activities included building and painting race cars while studying early racing pioneers.

The group also toured several historic landmarks, including The Casements, Cobb Cottage, and the MacDonald House. Organizers say the camp helps inspire appreciation for local heritage while making history engaging and accessible for younger residents.

🚒 Daytona Fire Chief Announces Retirement

Daytona Beach Fire Chief Dru Driscoll has announced plans to retire on July 24 after leading the department for 13 years. His final day actively working will be July 9.

While Driscoll did not cite a specific reason for retiring, his announcement comes amid multiple ongoing investigations involving city spending practices and scrutiny of Fire Department purchasing activity. State auditors, the city auditor, and the Florida Attorney General's Office have all examined aspects of city finances in recent months.

In his retirement letter, Driscoll reflected on the department's growth during his tenure and expressed optimism about its future despite criticism and controversy. The department recently unveiled a new $27 million headquarters and emergency operations center, one of several major projects completed under his leadership.
