Cities Are Running Out of Salt Before Winter Even Starts

Road salt is one of those things nobody thinks about until plow trucks come back empty, and this year that's happening before the first snowfall. Some cities haven't gotten a single bid for winter supply, while others are paying nearly double last year's price.

North America doesn't mine enough of its own, which is why it ships in 8 to 10 million tonnes from places like Egypt and Chile, two weeks away by boat.

Atlas Salt (TSXV: SALT | OTCQX: SALQF) is building a mine in Newfoundland near a deepwater port where ships can reach Boston in three days. With salt, the real cost is in shipping, and CEO Nolan Peterson says the difference is so big that overseas producers could give their salt away and still come out more expensive than Atlas. The project is shovel-ready and projected to generate roughly C$188 million a year in free cash flow.

🏠 Amendment 3 Brings Tax Relief and Budget Challenges

Amendment 3’s passage with nearly 62% statewide approval will bring homeowners larger exemptions while forcing local governments to reconsider spending.

The measure raises the homestead exemption for city and county property taxes to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. Volusia County projects an annual revenue reduction of $129 million, including $37 million affecting the sheriff’s budget and $16 million affecting fire rescue.

Supporters welcome relief from rising housing costs. Critics worry about service cuts and higher fees or assessments. State Rep. Bill Partington called for transition periods and protection of essential services.

Tax Collector Will Roberts emphasized that 2026 property tax bills remain payable. November payments qualify for a 4% discount.

🏈 Seabreeze Misses Playoffs by Half a Point

On the football field, Seabreeze’s season ended with a frustratingly narrow miss. The 6–4 Sandcrabs finished ninth in Region 2-4A, just 0.5 rating points behind eighth-seeded River Ridge.

Flagler Palm Coast also missed its regional field by half a point despite an 8–2 record, prompting coach Patrick Turner to question aspects of the ranking formula.

Mainland and Father Lopez advanced and will open on the road Friday, Nov. 13. Third-seeded Mainland visits district champion Winter Park, which receives home-field advantage despite its lower seed. Father Lopez travels to top-seeded Jacksonville Trinity Christian.

New Smyrna Beach also qualified and visits Lake Wales. Seabreeze was absent from the alternative Florida Invitational Tournament field.

🗳️ Ryan Elijah Claims Narrow Congressional Victory

In election news, Republican Ryan Elijah claimed victory Nov. 7 in Florida’s 7th Congressional District after state officials determined the initial unofficial results would not trigger a recount.

Elijah led Democrat Bale Dalton by 1,631 votes, a margin just above Florida’s 0.5% machine-recount threshold. Dalton had not conceded.

The district spans parts of Volusia and Seminole counties. Dalton carried Seminole, while Elijah’s stronger showing in Volusia helped put him ahead overall.

Overseas ballots may still arrive through Nov. 13, and results remain unofficial until certification scheduled for Nov. 17. Elijah, a former Orlando television news anchor, defeated incumbent Rep. Cory Mills in the Republican primary before advancing to the closely contested general election.
