🚀 Crew-13 Arrives for Oct. 1 Launch
NASA’s SpaceX Crew-13 astronauts have arrived at Kennedy Space Center as the countdown begins for a planned Oct. 1 launch to the International Space Station.
Commander Jessica Watkins, pilot and Volusia County native Luke Delaney, Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk and Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov will spend their final days completing suit checks, briefings and other preflight preparations. Liftoff aboard Crew Dragon Grace is targeted for no earlier than 11:10 a.m.
The mission will be Delaney’s first trip to space and Watkins’ second. During their approximately six-month stay, Crew-13 will participate in research examining how extended time in microgravity affects circulation, vision, physical performance and other aspects of astronaut health.
The findings could help NASA prepare crews for longer journeys to the Moon and Mars.

✈️ Girls in Aviation Day Inspires Big Dreams
More than 1,000 attendees were expected to explore the world of flight during the fourth annual Girls in Aviation Day at Daytona Beach International Airport.
Hosted Sept. 19 by the Daytona Beach chapter of Women in Aviation, the event featured airplanes, a helicopter, a NASA robot dog, face painting, a rivet station and representatives from aviation employers and educational programs.
The goal was to introduce girls to the wide variety of careers available in the industry, including opportunities as pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers and instructors. Organizers also highlighted scholarships that can help students pursue aviation training.
Some young attendees already had their flight plans mapped out. Ten-year-old Charlie Kinney said she hopes to become a Blue Angels pilot, while other participants used the event to discover possibilities they may not have considered before.

🐢 See a Washback Turtle? Call, Don’t Carry
Strong winds and rough surf can push newly hatched sea turtles back onto Central Florida beaches, but wildlife officials say well-meaning beachgoers should resist the temptation to lend a hand.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says these “washback” turtles may be exhausted or injured and require specialized care. Anyone who spots one should keep a safe distance, note the exact location and contact wildlife officials rather than picking it up or returning it to the ocean.
The reminder comes during a record nesting season in Volusia County, where more than 1,500 nests had already been counted by July.
The same advice applies to nests disturbed by rough surf. Beachgoers should leave them untouched and report the location to authorities. The FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline is available around the clock at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

1929 — A powerful Category 3 hurricane passed over Key Largo, with the storm's center crossing the Upper Florida Keys.
1929 — Long Key recorded extremely low atmospheric pressure as the hurricane passed through the Keys.
1929 — A hurricane-spawned tornado struck Fort Lauderdale, causing significant property damage and injuring 16 people.
1935 — Key West entertainer and diver Willie Wickers captured an octopus for the newly established Key West Aquarium, lost it en route, then recovered it from a sidewalk and delivered it to the aquarium.
1935 — Another major hurricane passed close to Miami, producing strong winds along Florida's southeast coast.
