🏛️ Deaton Secures Second Term in Ormond Beach

Ormond Beach Zone 3 City Commissioner Kristin Deaton has been reelected for a second term after her only opponent, Ted Rhodes, withdrew from the race Sept. 14.

Deaton, a lifelong Ormond Beach resident who works as a sales manager and mortgage loan originator at Guild Mortgage, was first elected in 2024. With no opponent remaining, she was automatically reelected. Deaton said she was grateful for the opportunity to continue serving, identifying affordability, responsible growth, infrastructure, public safety and quality of life among her priorities.

Rhodes, an Army veteran who has lived in Ormond Beach since 2022, cited personal reasons affecting his family’s well-being for leaving the race. Two other Ormond Beach commission contests — Zones 2 and 4 — remain headed to the Nov. 3 general election.

🗳️ Daytona Beach Shores or “The Shores”?

Daytona Beach Shores voters will have a new name to consider at the ballot box: “The Shores.” A proposed charter amendment would officially drop “Daytona Beach” from the 66-year-old city’s name.

Supporters say residents have informally used “The Shores” for decades and argue the shorter name better reflects the community’s distinct identity. Opponents contend it’s too generic and point to an estimated $244,000 to $277,000 cost for changes involving signs, documents and uniforms.

Before placing the question on the ballot, the city surveyed residents through several channels. Of 545 respondents — 95% verified as city residents — nearly two-thirds favored “The Shores.” City commissioners unanimously agreed to send the question to voters, who will now have the final say.

🛶 Explore Volusia Heads Into the Wild

October offers plenty of reasons to trade screen time for some fresh air, thanks to Volusia County’s free Explore Volusia programs.

Environmental specialists will lead eight outdoor adventures throughout the month, including hikes, paddling excursions and eco-buggy tours. Participants can search for fall wildflowers at Wiregrass Prairie Preserve, paddle among oyster reefs at Spruce Creek, look for migratory birds near Ponce Inlet or explore the County’s newest Volusia Forever property, Riverbend Preserve.

Other outings include trips to Heart Island, Lake George and Deep Creek Preserve. Some programs welcome all ages, while others are open to ages 10 and older. Reservations are required, and the County provides sit-on-top kayaks at no charge for paddling programs while supplies are available.

🐝 Know Your Florida Stingers

Wasps, hornets and yellow jackets all call Florida home, but knowing where they nest can help prevent a painfully memorable encounter.

Paper wasps typically build open, umbrella-shaped nests beneath eaves and porch ceilings and generally sting when threatened. Bald-faced hornets — technically a type of yellow jacket — construct large, enclosed paper nests in trees or on buildings. Florida’s only true hornet, the European hornet, often nests in hollow trees, walls and attics.

Then there are yellow jackets. Their nests are frequently hidden underground or inside structures, making accidental encounters more likely. They can sting repeatedly and become highly defensive when their colony is disturbed. They’re also drawn to sugary foods and drinks, meaning picnics and backyard gatherings can attract unwanted guests.

The takeaway: check before mowing, trimming or reaching into hidden spaces.
