♻️ Volusia Offers Free Hazardous Waste Drop-Off

Volusia County is giving residents two opportunities to clear out household hazardous waste without sending potentially harmful materials into the regular trash.

A free collection will run from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 9, at Ormond Beach Public Works, followed by another from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 10, at New Smyrna Beach Public Works.

Residents can bring paint, solvents, batteries, pool chemicals, pesticides, motor oil, gasoline and other household chemicals, plus up to 10 fluorescent lamps. Proof of Volusia County residency is required, and participants must remain in their vehicles while materials are unloaded.

Can’t make either date? Household hazardous waste is also accepted free year-round at the Tomoka Landfill and West Volusia Transfer Station.

🎸 Ormond Unplugs for Songwriter Festival

The Casements traded amplifiers for acoustic instruments as more than 70 acts performed during the inaugural Ormond Beach Unplugged Songwriter Festival on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Musicians performed across 10 stages positioned throughout the grounds and inside John D. Rockefeller’s historic winter home. True to the “unplugged” theme, performers relied on acoustic instruments and their own voices without microphones.

The lineup brought together local and out-of-state bands and songwriters, while artists, vendors and a youth art exhibit added to the creative atmosphere.

Presented by Songwriters Showcases of America, the new festival builds on the organization’s Ormond Beach Live music festival, which debuted in 2018 and ran for seven years. The new format offered audiences a more intimate way to experience the musicians and their songs.

📚 New School Book Directive Draws Concerns

Florida Education Commissioner Henry Mack has directed school districts and charter schools to continuously review library and classroom materials for prohibited sexual content, prompting criticism from two groups that advocate against book removals.

Mack’s Sept. 23 memo directs districts to review the state’s annual list of books removed elsewhere in Florida and examine titles they also carry. He argued that relying on parents to discover potentially prohibited material and initiate challenges is insufficient.

PEN America and the Florida Freedom to Read Project contend the directive could lead districts to preemptively remove more books based on actions taken elsewhere rather than relying on local objections and reviews.

Florida law already establishes procedures for challenging school materials and requires the state to maintain and distribute information about titles removed or discontinued by districts.
