🦕 Sea Turtle Nesting Season Kicks Off
Volusia County's beaches are officially on turtle watch, with nesting season underway as of May 1—though the first nest actually arrived as early as March 9, setting a new local record. Hundreds of sea turtles, from loggerheads to leatherbacks, are expected to make their annual pilgrimage to local shores. Last year, more than 900 nests were counted on county-managed beaches.
Residents are reminded to dim beachfront lighting, avoid disturbing nests, and keep the beach free of obstacles that can hinder hatchlings. For free resources on how to be sea turtle-friendly, visit VolusiaSeaTurtles.org.

🚑 ONEbox Kits Help Volusia Businesses Fight Overdoses
Local businesses are stepping up in the fight against opioid overdoses thanks to the Volusia Recovery Alliance. Over 114 businesses, including Giuseppe's Steel City Pizza, now have ONEboxes—kits containing Narcan and emergency training materials. These life-saving boxes are funded through Florida's opioid settlement and coordinated with the Port Orange South Daytona Chamber of Commerce.
Restaurant managers report feeling better prepared for emergency situations, and the program has already helped avert at least one critical incident. Interested businesses can contact the Volusia Recovery Alliance to receive a kit.

🌮 From Chicharrones to Paletas: How Mexican Cuisine Shaped Northwest Volusia
What began as a struggle for familiar flavors has grown into a thriving tapestry of Mexican culinary tradition in northwest Volusia County. Immigrants like Fortino Mendez and Sergio Castillo Cruz have preserved and shared their heritage through beloved street foods like chicharrones and traditional baked goods.
Mendez, a former fern cutter, now sells up to 150 pounds of pork cracklings a day from his food truck, while Cruz bakes 1,200 pieces of bread daily at Panaderia La Michoacana in DeLeon Springs. Popsicle maestro Jesus Valverde teaches others to make handmade paletas—a sweet link to Mexico for immigrants and a growing fan base of all backgrounds.
Colorful food trucks, bakeries, and paleta shops now dot the region, proving that what was once hard to find is now a celebrated part of the community's identity.

⚡ Dangerous Animal Sedative Found in Street Drugs
Health officials are warning of medetomidine—an animal sedative now turning up in the illicit drug supply, often mixed with fentanyl. The CDC recently confirmed clusters of overdoses in cities like Chicago and Philadelphia where Narcan was less effective than usual. In Philadelphia, medetomidine appeared in 72% of tested opioid samples.
Officials stress the importance of awareness, as withdrawal symptoms tied to this sedative can be severe and resistant to typical treatment. The report underscores a growing complexity in overdose prevention efforts.
