🚨 Help When It Matters Most: Volusia Launches Volunteer Corps

Volusia County is calling on residents 18 and older to join the Volusia Ready Response Corps (VRRC), a new initiative aimed at helping the community prepare for and recover from emergencies. Volunteers will be trained to help during hurricanes, wildfires, and other crises—doing everything from placing tarps on roofs to distributing supplies and clearing debris.

An open house will be held June 5 from 4–5 p.m. at the Emergency Operations Center, 3825 Tiger Bay Road, Daytona Beach, with an orientation session following from 5–6 p.m. Groups and individuals of all backgrounds and skill levels are encouraged to join.

Learn more or sign up at volusia.org/VRRC, call 386-943-7039, or email [email protected].

🎨 Picture Perfect: Ormond's Sculpture Photo Contest

The Ormond Beach Arts District invites you to enter its "Art Imitates Life" photography contest before the May 10 deadline. Categories include: Strike a Pose, Interact, and Be Creative—all designed to bring Seward Johnson's beloved bronze sculptures to life one more time.

Winners receive $100 and will be celebrated at a festive event on May 18, 4:30 p.m. at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum, featuring living sculptures, poetry readings, and more. Tickets are $85. Submit entries at bit.ly/artlife-2025.

While the sculptures return to New Jersey later this month, they'll be temporarily displayed together at The Casements and 56 N. Beach St. beginning May 19. Plans are already in motion to bring a new exhibit in January 2026.

💃 Curtain Call: Ormond Ballet Seniors Shine in "Swan Lake"

Ormond Ballet is closing its season with a heartfelt performance of "Swan Lake" on May 4 at 7 p.m. at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center, 399 N. U.S. 1. The show stars three graduating seniors—Eris Potts (Black Swan), Baylee Rogan (White Swan), and Mira Khanna (Villager's pas de deux)—each taking on challenging roles to mark their final bow.

The show features 40 dancers across all levels, offering a rich mix of talent and emotion. Artistic Director Michelle Boutros, returning to the stage post-surgery as "Queen Mother," says the show is a bittersweet send-off for the seniors.

Tickets are $35. Visit ormondbeachperformingartscenter.csstix.com to reserve your seat.

🌊 Jetty Connector Reopens at Ponce Inlet

Good news for walkers, anglers, and photographers: Volusia County has reopened the jetty connector at Lighthouse Point Park. Closed since late 2024 due to storm damage, the pathway now features 144 feet of new wood decking and 567 feet of concrete decking.

Next steps include installing a north-side staircase and extending the jetty deck 400 feet west, eventually connecting it to the planned Lighthouse Point Park Boardwalk Project. Once complete, the area will offer an ADA-accessible, storm-resilient shoreline route perfect for scenic strolls or dolphin watching.
