🏗️ New Development Meeting Set for U.S. 1 Project in Ormond Beach

Residents near North U.S. Highway 1 are invited to learn about a new proposed commercial development at 890 N. U.S. Hwy 1. Developer 890 N US HWY 1, LLC plans to subdivide a 12.5-acre parcel into four lots with a common area and construct turn lanes, access roads, stormwater systems, and utility infrastructure to support over 116,000 square feet of commercial, office, and warehouse space.

A Neighborhood Meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at 6:00 PM at the Hampton Inn Daytona / Ormond Beach, 155 Interchange Blvd. The session will include a presentation and open discussion for residents to ask questions and share input.

Those needing accommodations or interpreters should contact the City Clerk’s Office at 386-677-0311 at least 48 hours before the meeting.

💸 Scam Alert: $30K Vanishes in a Fake Bank Sting

A 76-year-old Ormond Beach man learned a hard lesson in modern fraud tactics after a scam artist tricked him out of $30,000 with a fake banking alert. It all began with a text message asking if he’d authorized an $800 purchase at a big box store. When he replied “no,” things quickly escalated.

Posing as a bank fraud department employee, a caller convinced the man that two bank insiders were stealing from customers. The solution, bizarrely, was to withdraw $30,000 in cash, split it into boxes, and hand it off to strangers. The first drop-off of $20,000 was collected at his home. The second box — containing $10,000 — was initially rejected due to the Uber driver’s low gas tank, but another car soon came by to finish the job.

The man was told the money would be reimbursed by Oct. 6, but when that day passed and the “bank’s” phone line was disconnected, he called the police.

Scammers are getting creative. Authorities urge residents to never send cash or hand off money to strangers, no matter how legitimate the request may sound.

🛡️ Local Philanthropist Honored for Backing the Badge

Shifting from scams to support, the Ormond Beach Police Department took a moment this week to recognize someone making a big difference behind the scenes. Entrepreneur and philanthropist L. Gale Lemerand was honored for his ongoing commitment to public safety and his over $130,000 in donations to the Ormond Beach Police Foundation.

Founded in 2020 by former city leaders, the foundation has funded essential officer training, state-of-the-art equipment like drones and fingerprint scanners, and mental health initiatives. Chief Jesse Godfrey noted the importance of Lemerand’s contributions, especially the Compassion Fund, which empowers officers to help community members — such as buying gas or covering a hotel stay — and supports families of fallen officers.

One touching example: a $5,000 gift to the widow of Officer Michael Bakaysa, made possible by the foundation. Most recently, it helped fund a golf cart to boost community outreach efforts.

Lemerand said he was humbled by the recognition. “I do support the police and I’m willing to do everything I can,” he said. With continued backing from community leaders like him, OBPD is better equipped to serve and protect.
