🦃 Honoring Veterans with a Holiday Feast
Volusia County is serving up more than just gratitude this Thanksgiving. The Veterans Services Division is partnering with the Volusia Basket Brigade to distribute 200 boxes filled with all the fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving meal—each one enough to feed a family of six.
Starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, local veterans can pick up a food box at the Veterans Services office at 1845 Holsonback Drive in Daytona Beach. It's first-come, first-served, and proof of military service is required.
“Our veterans have given so much to protect our freedom, and it's an honor to support them and their families during the holiday season,” said Veterans Services Director Scott Olson.
This heartfelt effort is part of a broader mission by Volusia County Veterans Services to support local heroes with everything from benefits claims to community resources. For more information, call 386-740-5102 or visit www.volusia.org/veterans.

🌟 ‘Power and Warmth’-Remembering Lowell Lohman
Ormond Beach recently said goodbye to a giant in community spirit and entrepreneurship, Lowell Lohman, who passed away at 80. Known for his commanding presence and heartfelt generosity, Lowell built a business empire with his brother Victor—owning more than 30 funeral homes and cemeteries across Florida—and never stopped giving back.
From his early athletic stardom to a science-driven career pivot, Lowell’s life was filled with grit, passion, and perseverance. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 18, he beat the odds by living a full and impactful life, even helping to create the Halifax Health Lohman Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology.
Alongside his wife Nancy—his self-proclaimed Cinderella—Lowell supported causes close to his heart: diabetes care, animal welfare, and science education. The couple funded everything from a humane society to a planetarium, touching thousands of lives across the community.
As we reflect on his legacy, one phrase continues to echo through those he inspired: “Teach and share.” Lowell Lohman wasn’t just a philanthropist—he was a force of nature, wrapped in wisdom and warmth.
Funeral services will be held on Nov. 7 at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center. Memorial donations can be made to organizations he championed, including the Lohman Diabetes Center, MOAS Lohman Planetarium, and Halifax Humane Society.

🌟 Ormond Schools Earn Top State Honors
Three Ormond Beach schools are basking in the academic spotlight. Pine Trail Elementary, Ormond Beach Elementary, and Seabreeze High School have been named 2024-2025 Florida Schools of Excellence by the Florida Department of Education. The accolade is awarded to schools performing in the top 20% statewide for consistent academic achievement over several years.
This recognition comes as part of a broader success story for Volusia County, with six schools in the district making the prestigious list. The Florida Schools of Excellence designation doesn’t just acknowledge strong performance; it also provides schools with more flexibility and autonomy to pursue innovative educational practices.
Volusia County Schools celebrated the achievement on social media, applauding the students, teachers, staff, and leaders whose dedication made it all possible. "Your dedication to excellence continues to make Volusia County Schools shine bright," the district noted in a Facebook post.
It’s a moment of pride for the community, and a testament to the enduring value of hard work, resilience, and a focus on continuous improvement.
