⛵Columbus Day: Honoring a Historic Voyage
Each October, Columbus Day commemorates one of history’s most consequential voyages: Christopher Columbus’s Atlantic crossing in 1492. Traditionally, the holiday honors his courage, determination and navigational skill, along with the exploration his journey inspired.
Born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451, Columbus became an experienced mariner who believed he could reach Asia by sailing west. After years of seeking financial support, he won the backing of Spain’s King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.
On August 3, 1492, Columbus departed Spain with three ships: the Niña, Pinta and Santa María. The expedition ventured across unfamiliar waters, testing the endurance of its crews. On October 12, land was sighted, and Columbus reached an island in the Bahamas. Although he believed he had approached Asia, his voyage opened a new chapter in European exploration of the Americas.
American celebrations of the anniversary date back to the eighteenth century. In 1892, President Benjamin Harrison proclaimed a national observance marking the voyage’s four hundredth anniversary, encouraging ceremonies emphasizing patriotism and education.
Columbus also became an important figure for Italian Americans, who celebrated his achievements as a source of cultural pride. Their advocacy helped establish the holiday as a lasting national tradition.
Congress authorized an annual federal observance in 1934. Originally associated with October 12, Columbus Day is now observed on the second Monday in October.
Through parades, community gatherings and lessons about exploration, the traditional holiday celebrates an adventurous spirit and a historic journey that helped connect continents and profoundly influenced the development of the modern world.
📚 Library Friends Make a Big Difference
Volusia County libraries will celebrate National Friends of Libraries Week Oct. 18–24, recognizing volunteers who support all 14 branches.
Friends groups contributed more than $200,000 during fiscal year 2026, funding performers, reading programs, technology, equipment and refreshed furnishings. They also teamed up to purchase reading kits that help beginners practice essential skills.
Residents can support their local group by joining, volunteering or visiting a book sale. Those bargain books help make a bigger community impact.

♠️ Rotary Deals a Hand for Charity
Another way to give back: the Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach and Seacoast Bank will host a Texas Hold’em charity tournament Friday, Oct. 23, at Oceanside Country Club, 75 N. Halifax Drive.
Doors open at 6 p.m.; play begins at 7 p.m. Proceeds support No Longer Fatherless, which mentors boys ages 6–19 in Volusia and Flagler counties, plus other Rotary charities.
Player seats are $100, and spectator tickets are $50. Find tickets and sponsorship details at rcdob.com/poker.

🍽️ Rising Costs Squeeze Local Businesses
Meanwhile, rising expenses are challenging Volusia County restaurants. Stoked Poke owner Eric Jackson says tighter household budgets mean fewer meals out, while payroll and rent still need paying.
His Daytona Beach and Port Orange locations lean on food truck appearances, catering and events to help cover costs.
Team Volusia CEO Keith Norden says the county still offers advantages for entrepreneurs, including available space, workforce and business resources. Jackson remains optimistic, crediting community support for helping his business grow from its food truck beginnings.

🏍️ Trikes Warm Up for Biketoberfest
At Destination Daytona, custom three-wheelers took center stage during Triketoberfest, offering a preview of the motorcycle crowds to come.
Riders showed off everything from elaborate skull artwork to a homemade trike fitted with Corvette wheels. Vendors, live music and a trike show rounded out the gathering.
Some participants said weather appeared to soften attendance, but enthusiasm remained high for the main event. The 34th annual Biketoberfest runs Oct. 15–18, bringing riders to Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach and surrounding communities.

🌊 Flagler Beach Pier Takes Shape
Up the coast, Flagler Beach’s rebuilt pier is moving toward completion. Concrete construction is finished, with utility work, railings and wooden decking next.
The 800-foot pier stands 10 feet higher than its predecessor and features turtle-friendly lighting. Its breakaway deck panels are designed to reduce structural stress during severe storms.
Substantial completion is anticipated in January, final completion in February, and opening in spring, weather permitting. City commissioners have approved free admission for at least the first year or two.
