🚨 New Tools for 911 Dispatchers

Volusia County Council approved new technology Oct. 6 to help 911 dispatchers assess emergencies and coordinate responses.

The Priority Dispatch System will guide call takers through questions tailored to medical, fire and law enforcement situations, helping identify the urgency and resources needed. Trained personnel will continue speaking directly with callers.

Implementation will include testing, integration and dispatcher training. The system is expected to begin handling live calls in the coming months.

📚 Pioneer Families’ Books Preserved

A piece of local history has found a new caretaker. Historian Jordan Hobson acquired approximately 70 books once owned by the families of E.G. Harris and Dr. William H. Carter, early Holly Hill settlers.

Harris also holds a place in Daytona Beach history as its first year-round photographer.

The collection offers a tangible connection to families who helped shape these communities—a reminder that local history can live between the covers of an old book.

🛒 Theft Threatens Neighborhood Store

In Daytona Beach, employees warn that theft could force a Dollar General near International Speedway Boulevard to close. General Manager Erin McCauley estimates the store lost more than $300,000 in merchandise last year.

Additional staffing and fewer shopping carts have not stopped the losses, she says. Employees are instructed to avoid confrontations that could endanger them.

Residents worry a closure would reduce shopping options in an area a city commissioner has described as a food desert. No closure has been announced.
