🛠️ Step Into Florida’s Pioneer Past in Barberville

In western Volusia County, the Barberville Pioneer Settlement gives visitors a look at Florida life from the 1800s into the early 20th century. The 30-acre site has 20 historic structures, many moved from other Florida communities. Among them is an 1885 railroad depot from Pierson, a reminder of when trains carried people and supplies and telegrams connected families across long distances.

The settlement also keeps traditional skills alive through spinning, weaving and blacksmithing demonstrations. Children can try dipping candles and see how much work went into lighting a home before electricity. The settlement is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday. See more at Barberville Pioneer Village.

🏛️ Ormond Beach Honors Outgoing Mayor Jason Leslie

Ormond Beach thanked Mayor Jason Leslie for his two years in office with a plaque bearing a golden gavel at his final City Commission meeting on Nov. 4. Leslie brought a new gavel for Mayor-elect Lori Tolland and kept his own as a souvenir. In his farewell remarks, he thanked residents and pointed to the effects of Amendment 3 and the reopening of River Bend Golf Course as issues facing the city.

Commissioners Travis Sargent and Harold Briley also said goodbye after two terms each. Jennifer Bright defeated Sargent in Zone 2, and Amber Bobak defeated Briley in Zone 4. Briley highlighted the creation of the Citizens Academy, while Sargent said he looked forward to finding new ways to serve the community.

🎨 Halifax Art Festival Returns to Beach Street

More than 200 artists will show juried work at the free Halifax Art Festival in downtown Daytona Beach this weekend. The festival runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, on Beach Street between Bay Street and Orange Avenue.

Visitors can meet artists, watch demonstrations, browse student artwork and craft booths, and enjoy live music. Food and beverages will be available, and the festival is an easy starting point for a stroll along the Riverfront Esplanade or a stop at a downtown gallery. Purchases directly support participating artists.

🚤 High Water Closes Some Volusia Boat Ramps

If your weekend plans include getting out on the water, check your launch site before heading out. Volusia County has temporarily closed several county-maintained ramps along the St. Johns River and the Intracoastal Waterway.

Recent rain raised the St. Johns, submerging some parking areas and concealing debris. The county expects river closures to last longer. Along the Intracoastal, king tides can flood ramps, docks and parking areas even when they look accessible at low tide. The county expects affected Intracoastal ramps to stay closed through late next week, pending safety checks.

Follow posted closures and idle-speed, no-wake restrictions. Check the county’s boat ramp status page before leaving.
