🏁 SMA Healthcare Raises $281,000

SMA Healthcare Foundation’s Annual Dinner Celebration & Auction brought generosity and a little NASCAR star power to the DAYTONA 500 Club, raising $281,000 for SMA Healthcare programs.

The Aug. 26 event featured a fireside chat with NASCAR Cup Series driver Austin Dillon, emcee Kim Coon and NASCAR champion Michael Waltrip. Volusia Sheriff Michael Chitwood presented $35,000 on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office, while Randy and Daniel Dye of 71MVP contributed $25,000. The live auction added another $65,000.

More than $29,000 went to the Larry and Joan Kelly Scholarship Fund. The evening concluded with SMA’s traditional “coin out” ceremony, during which former client and current employee Lex Cunniff shared her recovery story before presenting a commemorative recovery coin to Dillon.

🐕 Rescue Rallies for Dogs in Need

Daytona Beach German Shepherd Rescue brought its mission to The Casements on Sept. 12, raising money to help abused and mistreated German Shepherds, mixes and Belgian Malinois find safer futures.

Funds from the event help cover veterinary care, food, toys and other necessities as rescued dogs transition into foster homes. Founder Eva Ziehl said foster families are particularly important because more available homes mean more dogs can be saved.

One rescue has already found a special calling. Trooper, once spotted limping down a street, is now completing training with Ground Zero Emergency Training Center in Oklahoma. He is being prepared to assist search-and-rescue teams, FEMA and fire departments with recovery operations following disasters.

The rescue also encourages pet owners to spay and neuter their animals to help reduce shelter populations.

⏰ Will Florida Still Fall Back?

Florida may want permanent daylight saving time, but federal law still stands between the Sunshine State and year-round later sunsets.

Florida enacted its own Sunshine Protection Act in 2018, expressing the Legislature’s intent to observe daylight saving time year-round if Congress changes federal law to allow states to do so. Under current federal rules, states can choose permanent standard time, but they cannot independently remain on daylight saving time throughout the year.

According to the Daytona News-Journal, federal Sunshine Protection Act legislation aimed at changing those rules has advanced in Congress, but further action is still required.

Unless federal law changes beforehand, daylight saving time is scheduled to end Sunday, Nov. 1. At 2 a.m., clocks will turn back one hour, bringing earlier sunrises — and those noticeably earlier Florida sunsets.
