🚔 Suspect in Custody After Violent Incidents

A suspect is in custody following a series of incidents Sunday that included an assault on an elderly couple in Ormond Beach and the shooting of an Ormond Beach police officer in Daytona Beach, according to police.

Authorities said the suspect faces two counts of attempted felony murder connected to the assault, with additional charges possible. Police clarified that the attempted murder charges are not related to the officer shooting.

One incident occurred outside Daytona College in Ormond Beach, while the officer was shot at AdventHealth in Daytona Beach. The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police also reported two additional victims, though their identities and conditions were not immediately available.

The investigation remains ongoing, but authorities said the suspect is in custody and there is no continuing threat to the community.

🌧️ El Niño Could Bring Heavy Rain and Tornadoes

A potentially record-setting El Niño could dramatically change Florida’s weather this winter, bringing considerably more rain along with an elevated risk of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Florida water managers are preparing for as much as three feet of rain during the dry season — roughly two feet above normal for the region. Statewide, strong El Niño winters can produce six to more than 10 inches of rainfall above average, with Central and South Florida among the areas that can see the largest increases.

Tornadoes are another concern. Historical state data cited in the report shows Central and South Florida recorded 82% more tornadoes during El Niño years than La Niña years and 33% more than neutral years.

The comparison drawing particular attention is the powerful 1997-98 El Niño, when a devastating overnight Central Florida tornado outbreak killed 42 people. Forecasters caution that individual storms cannot be predicted months ahead, but the expected pattern favors a wetter, stormier Florida winter.

  • 1817 — Revolutionary privateer Louis-Michel Aury raised the flag of the revolutionary Republic of Mexico over Fort San Carlos at Fernandina on Amelia Island and proclaimed the island annexed to Mexico.

  • 1920 — The City of Miami reached an agreement with the estate and companies of Henry Flagler to acquire important waterfront and riparian rights along Biscayne Bay.

  • 1925 — Key West’s Supervisor of Registration reminded prospective voters that they needed a 1925 poll-tax receipt to register, illustrating the voting restrictions then in force in Florida.

  • 1926 — Miami continued recovering from the catastrophic Great Miami Hurricane; photographs taken on September 21 documented extensive wreckage at Brickell Park and elsewhere along Biscayne Bay.

  • 1948 — A powerful hurricane crossed the Lower Florida Keys, producing sustained winds of 122 mph at Boca Chica Naval Air Station.

  • 1948 — The same hurricane brought hurricane-force conditions to Key West, damaging boats, trees, buildings, utilities, and other property.

  • 1948 — Miami experienced winds near 90 mph, heavy rain and substantial coastal flooding as the hurricane moved through South Florida.

  • 1948 — Storm-driven water rose nearly five feet above mean sea level along portions of Miami's bayfront, damaging docks around Coconut Grove.

  • 1948 — The ocean-road approach to the Haulover Bridge at Miami Beach was destroyed by the hurricane.

  • 1951 — Key West Mayor Louis M. J. Eisner dedicated the city's new Wickers Stadium before an estimated crowd of 3,000.

  • 1951 — The Miami Sun Sox and Havana Cubans played the first baseball game at the newly dedicated Wickers Stadium in Key West.

  • 1960 — The U.S. Department of the Interior approved protective regulations for the Key Largo Coral Reef Preserve to prevent destruction or removal of its natural and historical resources.

  • 1975 — George and Maryanne Rockett reopened their Underseas, Inc. dive shop at a new location on Big Pine Key, part of the Florida Keys' growing recreational diving industry.

  • 1999 — High winds from Tropical Storm Harvey prompted officials to close Monroe County public schools for the day.
