🛞 Volusia Offers Free Tire Drop-Off in Pierson
Volusia County residents can drop off old tires for free from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at 824 North County Road 3 in Pierson. Signs will direct drivers to the drive-through drop-off area.
Each household can bring up to 20 residential tires, all removed from their rims. Bring proof of Volusia County residency, such as a driver’s license or other government-issued ID. Commercial tires are ineligible, and staff will accept tires only during event hours.
Old tires collect rainwater where mosquitoes can breed. The county collected more than 3,500 tires during the previous program year. Residents can request mosquito control service or sign up for treatment alerts at Volusia County Mosquito Control.

🎖️ Gulf War Tribute Coming to Ormond Memorial Art Museum
In Ormond Beach, the City Commission voted unanimously Nov. 4 to approve a permanent sculpture honoring Gulf War veterans at Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens, 78 E. Granada Blvd.
Florida sculptor Julio Aguilera will create Guardian of the Gulf, a 10- to 12-foot work in weathering steel. The material’s earth tones are meant to evoke the desert landscape associated with the Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm. The city will cover the $40,000 cost through its downtown community redevelopment fund, and installation is expected in 2027.
It will be the gardens’ fifth military tribute, joining sculptures honoring veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

🏫 Ormond Beach Pauses Osceola Elementary Purchase
At the same meeting, Ormond Beach commissioners voted unanimously to table the $2.5 million contract to buy the former Osceola Elementary site from the Volusia County School Board.
Mayor-elect Lori Tolland asked staff to seek an extension and explore other ways to fund the purchase after Amendment 3 passed. The city had planned to use recreation impact fees, potentially with an advance from pooled city cash. A county ECHO grant is among the alternatives under discussion.
City officials remain interested in the 11.6-acre site. They may also ask the neighboring Hillside Cemetery Association whether it wants to buy a portion. The incoming commission will be sworn in Nov. 17, and closing could take six to nine months if the purchase moves forward.
