🌧️ Volusia’s Growth Raises Flooding Concerns

Volusia County’s coastal appeal keeps attracting newcomers, but rapid growth comes with questions about where all that rainwater will go. A new study ranks Volusia 23rd among America’s fastest-growing counties facing elevated natural disaster risks, with roughly 53,000 residents added between 2020 and 2025.

For residents concerned about flooding, wetland development is a particular worry: losing natural areas that collect rainwater could worsen drainage problems. The study places Volusia’s river-flooding risk in the 95.2nd percentile nationally and coastal flooding risk around the 85th percentile.

New Smyrna Beach Realtor Mimi McKee says buyers increasingly ask about flood history, elevation and insurance costs. The coastal lifestyle still draws them—but they’re doing more homework before signing.

🧳 New TSA Scanners: Measure Before You Fly

Meanwhile, residents heading out of town have another detail to check before leaving home: carry-on dimensions.

TSA is rolling out CT scanners that produce three-dimensional images of luggage contents, helping officers identify potential threats with greater clarity. The catch? Their openings are smaller than those on older machines.

The new openings measure approximately 24.5 inches wide and 16.5 inches high. A typical airline-approved carry-on measuring 22 by 14 by 9 inches should fit, so most travelers can keep their usual suitcase.

Still, airline size limits vary. Measure your bag, including wheels and handles, and check your airline’s rules before departure. A quick check at home could spare you an unexpected trip to the baggage counter.
