Scammers Exploit Global Tech Outage Amid CrowdStrike Software Malfunction
Photo: Spectrum News
Following a significant global tech outage caused by a faulty software update from CrowdStrike, malicious actors are exploiting the chaos through phishing schemes. Government cybersecurity agencies and CrowdStrike's CEO have warned businesses and individuals about scammers posing as CrowdStrike employees. The UK Cyber Security Center noted a rise in phishing attempts, while Microsoft revealed that 8.5 million Windows devices were affected. The airline industry was severely disrupted, with Delta Air Lines and United Airlines experiencing major cancellations. Healthcare systems faced clinic closures and surgery cancellations, highlighting the need for analog backups. Experts are questioning CrowdStrike's quality control, though analysts doubt new regulatory mandates will result. Businesses are advised to remain vigilant against scams, using only official fixes from CrowdStrike. (See Full Story at ClickOrlando)

Many Older Adults Take Daily Aspirin to Cut Cardiovascular Disease Risk, Despite Dangers
In recent years, the approach to using aspirin for preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD) has undergone significant changes, yet many Americans aged 60 and older continue to follow outdated practices. Despite updated guidelines highlighting the risks of bleeding and anemia associated with aspirin, a substantial number of older adults still take it daily for primary prevention of heart attacks and strokes.
Historically, aspirin was widely recommended for both primary and secondary prevention of CVD. This consensus shifted in 2018 after the publication of three major trials, which revealed that the risks often outweigh the benefits for individuals without a prior heart attack or stroke. The new guidance advises against routine aspirin use for primary prevention but continues to support its use for secondary prevention in patients who have already experienced cardiovascular events.
Both the American Heart Association and the United States Preventive Services Task Force have revised their guidelines, emphasizing that aspirin is not suitable for everyone and carries significant risks. Nevertheless, recent data indicates that 18.5 million Americans aged 60 and older, about one in three, still take aspirin for primary prevention. Alarmingly, 3.3 million of these individuals do so without medical advice, despite the potential dangers.
Sources suggest that the persistence of this practice can be attributed to the time it takes for new medical data to become widely accepted among physicians and patients. There may also be a lack of awareness or reluctance to change established medical routines. (See Full Story at Healthline)
